The Top Dog Breed
Labrador retrievers are the most popular dog breed in the U.S., but gaining popularity is the French bulldog. This according to the American Kennel Club (AKC)’s annual list of most popular dog breeds for 2017. AKC has ranked the most popular breeds annually since 1884 based on the previous year’s registration of some 175 different breeds of dogs. The Lab’s enduring popularity can be credited to its playfulness and loyalty, as well as its use as a police and search-and-rescue dog. Plus, they come in three colors. “The Lab is such a versatile dog that it’s no wonder it makes a great companion for a variety of lifestyles. Keep your eye on the Rottweiler, though. It’s been quietly winning hearts over the past decade,” said Gina DiNardo, AKC vice president.
The top 10 most popular dog breeds in America in 2017 were:
- Labrador retriever
- German shepherd
- Golden retriever
- French bulldog
- Bulldog
- Beagle
- Poodle
- Rottweiler
- Yorkshire terrier
- German short-haired pointer
The most notable dog trends of the year:
- The Labrador retriever though has held the top ranking in AKC’s list for 27 years, a feat attributed to the breed’s versatility and family-friendly nature.
- The German shepherd came in No. 2 for the second straight year. Rare breeds, including canaans, harriers and skye terriers, jumped several spots each last year, according to the AKC.
- The French bulldog climbed into the top four last year, knocking the Beagle out of the top five for the first time in nearly 20 years.
