The Most Popular Dog Breeds
The most popular pooch in the U.S. is the Labrador retriever — for the 26th consecutive year. And that’s a record, according to the American Kennel Club, which has ranked the most popular breeds annually since 1884 based on the previous year’s registration of some 175 different breeds of dogs. The Lab’s enduring popularity can be credited to its playfulness and loyalty, as well as its use as a police and search-and-rescue dog. Plus, they come in three colors. “The Lab is such a versatile dog that it’s no wonder it makes a great companion for a variety of lifestyles. Keep your eye on the Rottweiler, though. It’s been quietly winning hearts over the past decade,” said Gina DiNardo, AKC vice president.
